TRANSDERMAL CREAMS

Transdermal creams are the most popular method for getting your hormone supplementation; however, you often don’t absorb the first product you try. As a result, some women think it’s not working. It’s all about the absorption of a specific cream—no one cream works for everyone. Many of my patients—and I—prefer creams because they are directly absorbed through the skin and don’t have to pass through the digestive system, which decreases their potency. Transdermal creams allow for more natural patterns of dosing. I recommend metered-dose pumps for the best accuracy and to make sure that the cream goes on smoothly so that it is absorbed quickly. It’s best applied to the upper arm or inner forearm: rub the cream up and down on the arm until it’s absorbed—typically in ten to twenty seconds.

While skin creams are easy to use, you have to careful not to let your partner, child, or pet come into contact with them as they can have adverse effects, especially estrogen and testosterone. Make sure children especially are shielded as they are already getting an unwanted xenoestrogen load from the environment that is harmful. Contact can occur skin to skin or from towels, clothing, or bedsheets and blankets. Just as men are cautioned not to let others in their household come into contact with their testosterone supplements, women have to guard against inadvertently transferring hormonal creams to others.
